Tourné juste après Le lauréat pour l'un, et Rosemary's baby pour l'autre (et après Bullitt aussi, pendant qu'on y est), c'est l'histoire d'une rencontre entre un garçon et une fille...

A part cela, il y aussi de très jolies vues de New York. Un film sympathique.

Pour ceux que ça intéresserait, Hollywood Cavalcade (1939) qui vient de sortir à l'unitaire et dans le coffret Alice Faye / vol.2, n'est aucunement une comédie musicale (malgré la griffe Marquee Musical sur la jaquette) ni une comédie mais un très joli film lointainement adapté de la vie de Mabel Normand et Mack Sennet et dont l'intrigue nous parle de l'industrie du cinéma muet de 1913 à 1927. Superbes recréations de splasticks de l'époque par un un habitué du genre, Malcolm St Clair, le reste étant réalisé par Irving Cummings. Une très belle surprise pour ma part dans laquelle on croise Buster Keaton, Ben Turpin et Chester Conklin dans leurs propres rôles. Le duo Alice Faye / Don Ameche est parfait. Le nombre de chefs-d'oeuvre sortis en 1939 a laissé dans l'ombre certains films qui auraient mérité de ne pas y rester ; c'en est un.

Et bien, la qualité des films du coffret est au delà de mes attentes les plus optimistes. Et je redonnerais une chance à Rose of Washington Square vu l'avis très positif de Music Man. Pour le reste, ce n'est que du bonheur. Je posterai mon avis sur l'excellent The Great American Broadcast un peu plus tard dans le topic comédie musicale

Pour info :

A l'occasion du 75e anniversaire du studio, Fox repackage des titres déjà sortis, 4 par 4, dans une collection "classic quad set" classée plus ou moins par thème. On y trouve du noir, du mélo, du péplum. Rien de transcendant donc, à part le prix : 18 à 20 $ le lot de 4 films, mais je ne sais pas si ce sont les mêmes éditions déjà sorties avec bonus.

Ayé, de l'inédit on va en avoir, puisque Fox a décidé de réactiver ses sorties naphta en créant une nouvelle collection "à la demande". Lu sur nypost.com :

When Fox began distributing the MGM Limited Edition Collection in 2012, it seemed likely that Fox would eventually follow with its own manufacture-on-demand program. The Fox Cinema Archives, as it's called, is finally arriving sometimes this month, with three titles already available for pre-order at Amazon for $19.98 apiece: Rouben Mamoulian's romantic comedy "Rings on Her Fingers'' (1942) starring Gene Tierney and Henry Fonda; Irving Cumming's Technicolored Betty Grable musical "Sweet Rosie O'Grady'' (1943) with Robert Young; and Henry Hathaway's thriller "Diplomatic Courier'' (1951) starring Tyrone Power and Patricia Neal.

Other titles said to be included in the program's first wave include John M. Stahl's costume adventure "The Foxes of Harrow'' (1947) starring Rex Harrison and Maureen O'Hara; Arthur Pierson's "Dangerous Years'' (1947) with Billy Halop, Scotty Beckett, and Marilyn Monroe in a bit part; Ray McCarey's "The Perfect Snob,'' a delightfully obscure 1941 comedy starring Charlie Ruggles and Charlotte Greenwood; Hugo Fregonese's "The Raid'' (1954) with Van Heflin, Lee Marvin, Richard Boone and Anne Bancroft; and Edward L. Cahn's thriller "Twelve Hours to Kill'' (1960) with Sypros Skouras protege Nicos Minardos and Barbara Eden.

There are also four films directed by sometimes actor Irving Pichel: "Hudson's Bay'' (1941), an adventure with Paul Muni, Gene Tierney, Laird Cregar and Vincent Price; "The Man I Married'' (1940), an anti-Nazi tract starring Joan Bennett and Frances Lederer; "Secret Agent of Japan'' (1942), World War II propaganda with Preston Foster, Lynn Bari and Victor Sen Yung; and "Life Begins at 8:30'' (1942), a theatrical comedy starring Monty Woolley and Ida Lupino.

The partial list will also include a pair of titles previously available only as part of sets, Alan Dwan's "Frontier Marshal'' (1939) with Randolph Scott as Wyatt Earp and Cesar Romero as Doc Holliday; and Tay Garnett's "Love is News'' (1937) starring Tyrone Power, Loretta Young and Romero, which was remade as both "Sweet Rosie O'Grady'' and "That Wonderful Urge.''

I'm told that a second wave of titles will arrive in late July/early August, with Fox shooting for around 150 MOD titles by year's end. Given that the MGM titles are already there, I wouldn't be surprised if the Fox Cinema Archives titles were eventually available also at the Warner Archives website.

Là dedans quelques titres déjà édités. Aux US Love Is News dans le coffret Tyrone Power Matinee Idol et Frontier Marshal dans un coffret Ford (je le prendrais celui là, je ne l'avais pas). En France, The Raid et The Outcasts of Poker Flat chez Sidonis. En Espagne, chez Fox Espagne, Way of a Gaucho et Diplomatic Courier.

Au final, je piocherais peut-être moins dans ce catalogue que dans celui de la Warner, la Fox me branche moins, mais j’espérais qu'il leur reste quelques films noirs inédits. Peut-être plus tard.

Tout de même quelques titres qui retiennent mon attention: Intent to Kill (Jack Cardiff), Life Begins at Eight-Thirty (Irving Pichel, avec Ida Lupino et Cornel Wilde), Rings on Her Fingers (Rouben Mamoulian, avec Henry Fonda et Gene Tierney), Slattery's Hurricane (André de Toth, avec Richard Widmark, Linda Darnell et Veronika Lake), Suez (Allan Dwan, avec Tyrone Power et Loretta Young) et Slave Ship (Tay Garnett).

Reste à voir comment ce sera distribué, en espérant qu'on trouve ça facilement sur PlanetAxel ou, au pire, Amazon.com.

Il se trouve en bonus du zone 1 de My Darling Clementine. Je l'ai d'ailleurs testé pour le site. Le film est franchement pas terrible
