Re: Les Blu-ray Elephant Films

…
Most of the time when two transfers use the same aspect ratio, the one with the most information is best. But when you have one that is DP supervised (far more reliable than a "director approved" sticker), and the other with a huge information gain on the left and only minimal on the right, to me that indicates something else is afoot.
For anyone who needs further explanation, imagine this image is a frame from the negative (not a print):
The total area measures 1.33:1, and that total area was used during the silent era. Then sound came along and around 10% was taken from the left to make way for soundtracks. That left a 1.20:1 space to frame with. Once 1.37:1 was standardised in 1932, a small amount was taken from the top and bottom to facilitate this (frame #1). In the widescreen era, more was taken to create wider ratios such as 1.85:1 (frame #2). I'm confident the Criterion framing represents this way of framing, as it should.
The red line of framing, which is also 1.85:1, is probably what Universal have done. Going in to the soundtrack area results in a big gain on the left, and more top and bottom (note how this extra headroom is usually empty in the Universal transfer, and that heads are not cropped in the Criterion).
